HARIANMERDEKA.ID, Jakarta, European countries Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognized the state of Palestine. This brings the total number of UN member states recognizing Palestine to 146 out of 193. Commenting on this development, Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Fadli Zon, praised the actions of these three Western countries.

"I appreciate and support these countries, especially the Kingdom of Spain and Ireland, as the largest and most politically influential nations in the European Union. And, of course, Norway, which is a peaceful and pro-peace country in Scandinavia," Fadli said in a statement to HarianMerdeka on Wednesday, May 29.

The former Deputy Speaker of the DPR (2014-2019) expressed hope that other countries would soon follow the lead of these European nations. "For countries that have not yet recognized Palestine, this is the right time to do so. We appreciate Slovenia, Malta, and France for their positive signals," he added.

As a member of the DPR's Commission I, Fadli also urged the Indonesian government to play a central role in ASEAN regarding Palestine. "There are two ASEAN countries, Singapore and Myanmar, that have not yet recognized Palestine. In this context, we hope to play a contributive role," he emphasized.

Furthermore, Fadli argued that the increasing recognition of Palestine by Western countries is not only a call for the urgency of realizing peace and a two-state solution but also an expression of anger towards Israel's atrocities.

"It's true that peace talks have stalled since 2014. However, I see that the world is now very disgusted by Israel's cruelty, including from the Western world, which has been considered close allies of Israel. We recently witnessed a tragic event on Sunday (August 26) when Israel bombarded a refugee camp in Rafah. Over 45 people were killed, many of them burned alive," Fadli recounted.

The politician, who also serves as Vice President of the World Parliament League for Palestine, highlighted that the majority of the international community desires a sovereign Palestine.

"The fact that 146 out of 193 UN member states have recognized Palestine is not just a number, but a reaffirmation that more than 75 percent of countries in the world stand with Palestine. The truth can no longer be hidden. The US and UK could lose more credibility and reputation on the global stage. Even countries that have not recognized Palestine will lose their moral compass to speak about democracy and human rights," Fadli asserted.

Additionally, the Gerindra Party politician supported Indonesia's active role in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in facilitating dialogue on Palestine with the European Union.

"The recent idea of an OIC and European Union dialogue on Palestine is very positive. We in parliament are committed to supporting this idea. Considering that the DPR will become the President of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC (PUIC) next year and will host the conference, we will specifically invite European Parliament representatives to garner support for Palestine," he concluded.
