HARIANMERDEKA.ID,Jakarta - A number of demonstrators held a protest against the revision of Law No. 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting in front of the DPR RI Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday afternoon (May 27, 2024). The protest involved several journalist alliances and media worker unions. Amidst the protest, DPR RI Commission I member Muhammad Farhan expressed his appreciation for the journalists' actions.

"Thank you to the journalist alliances, student press, and pro-democracy organizations for the demonstration. This is one of our efforts to uphold the spirit of democracy, one of whose main pillars is freedom of expression," Farhan stated as he directly engaged with the journalists in front of the DPR/MPR Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (May 27, 2024).

On this occasion, he noted that the revision of the Broadcasting Law could potentially introduce regulations that are not in line with press freedom. Therefore, Farhan is committed to overseeing the progress of the Broadcasting Law amendment discussion, which is currently being deliberated in the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the DPR RI.

"We are striving to ensure that clauses infringing on freedom of expression do not get included. The process is currently in the Legislative Body, which will decide whether it can be discussed in the current session, ending in August, or if it will be continued in the next DPR term," said the politician from the NasDem Party.

Furthermore, Farhan expressed his agreement with the points raised by the journalists.

The journalists' protest voiced three main demands. Firstly, to cancel all problematic clauses in the Broadcasting Law revision. Secondly, to actively and meaningfully involve the Press Council, student press groups, and pro-democracy organizations in the discussion of the Broadcasting Law amendment. Thirdly, to ensure the protection of press freedom and freedom of expression in all legislation.
