HARIANMERDEKA.ID, Yogyakarta - On 20th May 2024, Indonesia celebrates National Awakening Day. While this commemoration is often associated with the founding of Boedi Oetomo in 1908, Haedar Nashir, the Chairman of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, emphasised that the national awakening movement, which built a sense of nationhood and nationalism for Indonesia's independence, was actually driven by the collective strength of people from various streams and national groups.
In this moment of National Awakening Day, Haedar hopes that Indonesia's sovereignty can be realised through various strategic and practical policies consistently implemented in the nation's real-life affairs.
"The country, with all of Indonesia's natural wealth, must be managed with integrity and high moral responsibility for the justice, prosperity, and progress of all Indonesian people," Haedar asserted on Monday (20/05). Haedar quoted Bung Hatta, stating that political sovereignty must align with economic sovereignty as proof of Indonesia's independence.
The Minister of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia, elected as the President of the Republic of Indonesia in the 2024 election, Prabowo Subianto, has long shown concern for Indonesia's sovereignty. In his book "The Indonesian Paradox and Its Solutions" (2022), Prabowo stated, "The most urgent disease in Indonesia's economic body today is the outflow of national wealth from Indonesian territory." Due to his commitment and consistency regarding Indonesia's sovereignty, Prabowo was awarded the Detikcom Awards 2023 as the "Figure of State Sovereignty."
Haedar expressed great hope that the elected government would be truly capable of realising Indonesia's sovereignty in reality and achieving all aspects of Indonesia's national goals as the noble and primary mandate with a high sense of statesmanship.
"Governments from period to period are obliged to uphold Indonesia's sovereignty as a unified mission in implementing policies and running the government from the central to local levels as mandated by the 1945 Constitution," Haedar added. The Constitution mandates that the state must protect all Indonesians and all of Indonesia's blood, promote the general welfare, enlighten the nation's life, and participate in the establishment of a world order based on independence, eternal peace, and social justice.
Haedar emphasised the importance of understanding and realising these fundamental dicta in national and state life by all citizens, elites, and state administrators of the Republic of Indonesia.
"Indonesia must be guarded and its sovereignty upheld as a fully sovereign nation free from all interventions and the presence of foreign or domestic parties that systematically weaken the nation's sovereignty," Haedar stressed.
Haedar also pointed out that economic and investment relations, with all their policies, are indeed necessary, but they must not undermine Indonesia's sovereignty in any form. These policies must prove to bring justice and prosperity to all Indonesian people.
"Irresponsible giant hands must not dictate the course of power and sovereignty or the management of natural resources in this beloved country. All this is for Indonesia's sovereignty, whose foundations and independence were fought for by all Indonesian patriots with sacrifices of life and limb, full of suffering and at a very high price," Haedar explained.
Haedar believes that many elites in this country are still highly committed to upholding Indonesia's sovereignty. What is needed is the accumulation of collective awareness and the functioning of the state system, which significantly leads to the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia in the real world.
"Hopefully, the message of the founders and national figures about the importance of Indonesia's sovereignty truly becomes the collective commitment and action of all government institutions and the elites and citizens of the nation for the glory of Indonesia. How to make Indonesia a country and nation truly sovereign from all forms of weakening, interference, exploitation, subordinates, and abuses that cause this country to lose its dignity, independence, and strength as a fully and wholly independent-sovereign nation," Haedar concluded.
