HARIANMERDEKA.ID, Jakarta - Prabowo Subianto, the elected President, emphasised the importance of objective criticism in maintaining democracy in Indonesia. According to him, democracy in Indonesia has grown stronger due to the development of the internet and social media.
"Criticism actually safeguards democracy, but the intention behind the criticism must be constructive and objective," Prabowo asserted in an exclusive interview titled “Prabowo Subianto Speaks for Indonesia” on Wednesday evening (22/05).
Prabowo also highlighted the importance of press freedom, acknowledging, however, that some mainstream media have become business conglomerates owned by a few individuals.
"Do the mainstream media, owned by a handful of people, truly reflect the interests of the public or their owners' interests?" he questioned.
He expressed his hope that, in the era of social media development, the public could access information from a wider range of sources, not just from a few media owners.
"Now there is a new phenomenon called the information revolution, with new media through the internet and social media. Information can reach the public quickly," he added.
Prabowo believes that democracy will grow stronger with the advancement of social media, ensuring that no single group of individuals dominates the public opinion of a nation.
